ADHD and Reading: Why You Lose the Thread and What Research Says Actually Helps

Three pages read, nothing remembered. Your eyes glided along the lines while your head was everywhere except the text — and now you have to go back, though you're not sure to where. For people with ADHD this isn't the exception; it's what reading is like every day. The good news: research from recent years shows quite precisely whatbreaks down in reading with ADHD — and points to tools that genuinely help. Why reading with ADHD is so hard

Reading is uniquely attention-hungry: it demands focus continuously, for a long time, with no external stimuli to sustain it. The key phenomenon is mind-wandering— involuntary drifting of thought, which researchers consider one of reading's main "silent" costs (Smallwood & Schooler, 2006). Everyone knows it, but in ADHD it happens more often and stays unnoticed longer: the eyes keep moving mechanically across the text, so from the outside everything looks normal — except content processing stopped a while ago.

Then there's working memory. Understanding a paragraph requires holding the beginning of a sentence in mind while you reach its end — exactly the resource that tends to be most taxed in ADHD. The result: text "falls apart" faster than for other readers, even with good motivation.

What eye movements reveal

Eye-tracking shows a characteristic signature of inattentive reading. Stern and colleagues (2024) compared the eye movements of adults with and without ADHD while reading longer texts: readers with ADHD re-read the same words far more often— a pattern of chaotic returns that didn't stem from text difficulty but from attention dropping out. This matters because it shows the problem isn't decoding words (that usually works fine) but maintaining continuity — and that fighting it with willpower means fighting your own neurology, not laziness.

What actually helps

  • External pacing. The best-tested intervention of recent years (more below): when the reader sets the pace instead of your willpower, attention gets a structure to lean on.
  • A goal before reading.One question asked before the text ("what do I want to find out?") turns passive eye movement into active search — and attention likes having a job.
  • Short sessions with a visible end.10–15 minutes with a timer and a clear "where I'm reading to" beats hour-long sittings — the longer the session, the more drift.
  • A trigger-free environment. Phone in another room, full screen, focus mode in your reader. Every notification is a guaranteed drift plus several minutes of recovery.
  • Visible progress.A percentage, a bar, chapters — closing small loops delivers the dopamine "done" that attention in ADHD needs more often.

Reading without eye movements: the most interesting recent result

In 2025, Moussaoui and colleagues tested three ways of reading in young adults with ADHD: normal, paced, and RSVP — words shown one at a time at a single point. In the RSVP condition, participants with ADHD understood text almost 13% better relative to controls — whom, interestingly, the same mode hindered. The mechanism is intuitive: RSVP leaves no room for chaotic returns and drift, because the text "happens" at one point, in a fully predictable rhythm. Putting it together in practice

Is speed reading a good idea with ADHD?

Classic speed reading training doesn't address the core problem, which is sustaining attention rather than pace. What does make sense are techniques with an externally imposed rhythm — guided pacing and RSVP — because they limit attention drift. A 2025 study found adults with ADHD understood text markedly better in RSVP mode.

Does RSVP help everyone with ADHD?

No — the study result is a group average, and individual responses vary. The best approach is to test it on yourself: read the same kind of text in normal mode and in RSVP at the same pace and compare how much you remember after each. You match the tool to your head, not the other way around.

How long should a reading session be with attention problems?

Start with 10–15 minute sessions with a planned endpoint (a chapter, a section) and a short movement break after each. Three short sessions a day beat one hour-long sitting — attention drift grows non-linearly with session length.

Does bionic reading help with ADHD?

Despite the technique's popularity, solid evidence of its effectiveness — including for ADHD — is so far lacking. Better-studied options are external pacing (RSVP, guided reading) and reading-environment hygiene: full screen, no notifications, short sessions.
