Subvocalization: Can You Turn Off the Voice in Your Head While Reading?

You're reading this sentence and probably hearing it in your head. That inner narrator is subvocalization— and according to most speed reading courses it's your main enemy: "switch off the voice and you'll read three times faster". Sounds logical. There's just one problem: the science says otherwise. In this article we explain what the voice in your head really is, why the brain generates it, what happens when you try to suppress it — and what, instead of fighting it, actually speeds up reading.

What subvocalization is

Subvocalization is the inner speech that accompanies silent reading — from a barely perceptible "echo" of the words to distinctly hearing your own voice. It even leaves a physical trace: classic electromyographic studies found micro-activity of the articulatory muscles during silent reading in many people (Hardyck & Petrinovich, 1970). But it's not a design flaw — it's part of the mechanism: as the brain recognizes words, it activates their phonological code — a representation of their sound — even when we say nothing.

Why the brain wants sound during silent reading

The most comprehensive review of phonology in reading (Leinenger, 2014) leaves little doubt: phonological codes arise automatically and early during silent reading, and they serve at least two functions. First, they support word recognition. Second — and crucially — they sustain working memory: a sound-based representation of a sentence lets you hold its beginning in mind until you reach the end and assemble the meaning. The voice in your head is largely the scaffolding on which comprehension of longer sentences stands.

What happens when you try to suppress the voice

This was tested experimentally decades ago. In Slowiaczek and Clifton's studies (1980), participants read while repeating irrelevant syllables aloud — a technique that occupies the articulatory system. Text comprehension dropped, especially where information had to be integrated across sentences. Hardyck and Petrinovich (1970) suppressed subvocalization with biofeedback: with easy texts the cost was small, but with harder ones comprehension clearly deteriorated. Both lines of research agree: suppressing inner speech doesn't unlock "hidden speed" — it takes away a tool you understand with.

Where the "kill subvocalization" myth comes from

The myth rests on seemingly logical arithmetic: speech runs at about 150–180 words per minute, so if you "pronounce" words in your head, that must be your ceiling. Except inner speech isn't full speech — it's compressed, abbreviated and much faster than articulation, which is why people silently read at 238 wpm and beyond (the average from a meta-analysis of 190 studies) while still "hearing" the text. The authors of the definitive review of speed reading research (Rayner et al., 2016) explicitly list eliminating subvocalization among the promises without evidence: the real limit on pace is language processing, not the inner narrator. Instead of fighting it: a practical plan

  • Reduce articulation, not phonology.If you move your lips while reading or "speak" the text with your whole vocal apparatus — that genuinely slows you down and is worth extinguishing. Leave the inner echo alone.
  • Raise the pace and the voice condenses by itself. With guided reading slightly above your comfort pace (say +15–20%), subvocalization naturally compresses — no fight required. It's the safest route: pace rises while you keep comprehension in check.
  • Not every text should sound the same. With easy, skimmable content the voice can fade to a minimum; with difficult prose, poetry or study material, fuller inner speech is an ally, not a brake.
  • Skip the old tricks. Counting in your head, humming or chewing gum while reading occupy working memory — exactly the resource reading needs. The articulatory suppression studies show the cost directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can you completely turn off subvocalization?

No — phonological codes arise automatically and early during silent reading, as confirmed by a review of over a century of research. What you can reduce is external articulation (lip movement, 'speaking' the text) and how elaborate the inner speech is — but eliminating it entirely is neither possible nor beneficial.

Does counting in your head or chewing gum help silence the inner voice?

These are old course tricks based on articulatory suppression — research shows they lower text comprehension, especially for harder material, because they occupy working memory. You may read 'faster' with them, but less of the reading sticks.

At what speed does subvocalization decrease?

Inner speech naturally condenses once your pace exceeds what full 'pronunciation' allows — for most people that starts around 300–350 words per minute. The best way there is gradual: guided reading 15–20% above your comfortable pace, with comprehension checks.

Is subvocalization a sign of a weak reader?

The opposite — it's a normal part of reading for everyone, including the fastest readers. The difference lies in condensation: skilled readers 'hear' the text in shorthand rather than word by word at speech rate. The only real problem is full articulation, such as moving your lips.
